Happy Thanksgiving

More than ever, the importance of this holiday is evident this year. Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Sorry for the lack of substantive updates the past few days but I will be back at it within the next two days (I've been home in Illinois for the first time since pre-Katrina).

A thank you from New Orleans to my hometown Baton Rouge:

Being from New Orleans, I had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I sat in my dining room at my home with my mom, dad, sister, grandparents, aunt and uncle, and my cousins. Barely over a month ago, we didn't think we'd be home in time for Thanksgiving. We didn't even know what we would be going home to.

Most of the people in my family were very very lucky during Katrina. We all suffered minimal to moderate damage. Even within my neighborhood, homes flooded but thankfully, not ours.

This was truly the first Thanksgiving of my life where I have had a hell of a lot to be thankful for.

I agree with you "lsu_meg".
I'm from New Orleans too and I can't even describe to you what I felt as I sat with my family last week. We, like you and many others, were luckier than some, yet we all have "lost" because of what's happened.

I drove through mid-city (Carrolton and Tulane Aves.) the night before Thanksgiving. The eerie quiet and the darkness of the streets told me that the place I had left a few months ago was different now. When I pulled into the parking lot of where I was going, I parked next to two white vans, each with a visible water mark up to the windows. As I walked near the vans I couldn't believe that just 3 months earlier, I would've been swimming in this parking lot, instead of walking.

Anyway, even though I saw just how dark parts of our city are, I have faith that the lights WILL come on again. And I'm not just talking about electricity...

(Thank you Jessie, for putting this together. It's wonderful and I know this is something you care about. And it's appreciated.)

Kristen and Meg,
Thanks for contributing your personal stories. For those not from the city, these continue to drive home the reality of this horrible disaster.

I wish y'all the best.
Jess
